Essential Responsibilities

The designee will be responsible for installing, operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing ground-based radar and airfield systems. This includes air traffic control radars, ground aircraft control and warning radar systems, ATC radios, and meteorological and navigation aid systems to ensure safe and efficient airfield operations.

The role involves resolving installation, repair, and modification issues related to ATCALS and C2 equipment. The technician applies line-of-sight and tropospheric scatter methods, conducts functional and performance testing, and uses schematics, layout drawings, and pictorial diagrams to diagnose faults and correctly position equipment. Detailed analysis of construction and operating characteristics is required to locate malfunctions, along with precise alignment and calibration to maintain peak system performance.

The designee also ensures strict adherence to maintenance management publications, safety standards, and technical orders. This includes inspecting installed and repaired components for compliance, maintaining accurate inspection and maintenance records, logging meter readings and operational data, completing maintenance data collection forms, and managing the requisitioning, tracking, and return of tools, supplies, and materials.

Systems and Equipment Supported

The technician will maintain and support a wide range of air traffic control, navigation, weather, and surveillance systems, including but not limited to: DME, ILS, MMLS, MPN-23, UPS, RCSU-2238, TACAN, TRN-44, VOR, RSI/RCI or equivalent monitoring systems, FMQ-19, FMQ-23, Micro-EARTS, Multi Source Correlator Tracker (MSCT), NRTD, STARS, STRAP, TDX-2000, MARK IVB, NEXION, Terminal Advisory System (TAS), GPN-27 (or 20), MPN-25, TPS-75, UPX-27, UPX-37, UPX-44A, CM-200, CM-300, GRC-171 and 211, GRR-23/24, PCAS, GRT-21/22, ETVS, Liberty Star, PL-2000DT, PRC-117, RT-1319, TRC-214, TRC-176, URC-200, ATIS, DVRS, and TTRS.
Support also includes equipment listed in Table 4.5.2 ATCALS Systems and Associated Support Equipment, Table 4.5.3 ATC Weather Systems and Associated Support Equipment, and Table 4.5.5 Regional Maintenance Center O&M and Support Equipment.

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • High School diploma or GED required; a relevant Associate’s degree is preferred.

  • Formal electronics training through a military technical school, vocational college, or a four-year electronics apprenticeship program with hands-on experience on similar electronic systems.

  • For COMSEC/IP networking equipment, IAT Level II baseline certification in accordance with AFMAN 17-1303 is required.

  • Level I Technician: At least four (4) years of recent, relevant, and practical experience working with electronic systems, including the specific equipment to be maintained.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US CENTCOM Medical Exam.

  • Must be able to obtain and hold a US Government Secret Security Clearance (US Citizenship required).
