Job Description: Assistant Manager – Kandy
Position Title: Assistant Manager
Location: Kandy, Sri Lanka
Employment Type: Full-time
Reporting To: Operations Manager / General Manager
Overview
We are currently hiring an Assistant Manager for our Kandy operations. This is a practical, mid-level leadership role focused on managing day-to-day business tasks, supporting frontline staff, and ensuring operations are steady and consistent. We’re not looking for slogans or overused claims of being a “go-getter” or “rockstar.” What we need is someone who shows up consistently, works with purpose, and solves problems using sound judgment.
If you’re someone who prefers action over talk, values responsibility, and is comfortable with structure, you’ll find this position rewarding. You’ll be part of a team that values thoughtful communication, measured decision-making, and practical leadership.
Main Purpose of the Role
The Assistant Manager is expected to take on a supportive leadership role. You will assist in running daily operations, coordinate with staff, help manage resources, and serve as a bridge between senior management and operational teams. While this is not an entry-level position, it’s also not one for someone who prefers to manage from a distance. You’ll be expected to work closely with staff and directly handle both challenges and opportunities that arise during operations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Daily Operations Management
- Monitor and oversee the execution of daily tasks across departments.
- Ensure that services or products are delivered as expected, on time, and within quality standards.
- Identify and resolve bottlenecks or inefficiencies that interrupt daily routines.
2. Team Coordination
- Support team leads and frontline employees by providing guidance, clarifying responsibilities, and helping resolve work-related challenges.
- Assist in preparing staff schedules and ensuring appropriate staffing levels.
- Serve as the first point of contact for staff-related concerns or escalations.
3. Customer Relations
- Respond to customer complaints and service issues professionally and in a timely manner.
- Maintain accurate records of complaints, resolutions, and follow-ups.
- Collaborate with customer service teams to maintain a respectful and problem-solving approach.
4. Inventory and Resource Monitoring (where applicable)
- Track supply levels, equipment usage, or inventory related to your department or location.
- Coordinate with procurement or suppliers to ensure timely replenishment.
- Maintain clear documentation of resource use and report discrepancies or concerns to management.
5. Reporting and Documentation
- Collect and organize operational data on team performance, delays, or task completion.
- Prepare weekly and monthly reports to assist senior managers with performance monitoring and decision-making.
- Keep track of leave, attendance, shift changes, or staff adjustments.
6. Support to Senior Leadership
- Help implement new policies, tools, or procedures introduced by upper management.
- Communicate changes clearly to staff and help them adapt without confusion.
- Serve as a reliable point of contact for management in day-to-day matters.
7. Compliance and Safety
- Monitor compliance with company guidelines, safety protocols, and relevant industry regulations.
- Address policy violations respectfully but directly.
- Support audits, inspections, or reviews when required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Management, or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in an operational or team leadership role.
- Experience in supervising staff, handling customer interactions, and resolving day-to-day issues.
- Proficiency in using basic office tools (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Word, and Email).
- Good command of spoken and written English. Fluency in Sinhala is required; Tamil is an advantage.
Preferred Attributes
- Dependable – You meet deadlines, keep promises, and follow through on responsibilities.
- Level-headed – You don’t overreact in stressful situations and remain solution-focused.
- Organized – You track tasks, communicate clearly, and maintain clear records.
- Observant – You notice changes, spot problems early, and don’t overlook small details.
- Respectful – You treat staff, customers, and peers with fairness and consistency.
We’re not interested in overhyped language. What matters most is your ability to lead quietly but effectively.
Work Environment
- Based at our Kandy location.
- Standard work hours are Monday to Friday, with flexibility for weekends or evenings during peak periods or urgent matters.
- A mix of office-based coordination and hands-on involvement in daily operations.
- Some local travel may be required for meetings, inspections, or external coordination.
Growth Opportunities
This role can lead to more senior operational or management roles over time. The pace of growth depends on performance, reliability, and your ability to improve team and task outcomes over time.
What We Offer
- A structured and supportive work environment.
- Fair and transparent policies regarding responsibility and accountability.
- Direct communication with management and decision-makers.
- The opportunity to develop your leadership skills in a grounded and realistic setting.
Who Should Apply
This position is best suited to someone who:
- Has held a supervisory or assistant managerial position in the past.
- Prefers structure, task clarity, and practical problem-solving over abstract ideas or overpromising.
- Wants to work in Kandy and can commit to an on-site leadership role.
- Takes ownership of their responsibilities and follows up without being reminded.
- Understands the importance of teamwork and leads without ego.
Application Instructions
Please include the following in your application:
- A current resume highlighting your operational or supervisory experience.
- A brief cover letter (up to 300 words) explaining how you approach leadership and team support.
- References or letters from past employers (optional, but helpful).
Shortlisted applicants will be contacted for an interview and may be asked to respond to a sample operational scenario or provide references.
Closing Statement
We are building a team that values consistency, accountability, and real leadership. As an Assistant Manager, your success will not be based on how well you speak in meetings or sell yourself on paper—it will be based on how well you help others get their jobs done and how clearly you manage your own.
If you’re ready to take responsibility, stay organized, and lead with clarity and fairness, we look forward to hearing from you.
